Usually once school has started adoptions seem to pick up. Not this year, adoptions have been way down, and surrendering of animals is up.Is this true of most of the other shelters out there?

Season vs economy.
Adoption seasons vs dump seasons vs peoples ability to comfortably adopt a pet at all.
Its about the same story everywhere. Everyones full.

In the western suburbs of Chicago, I find that adoption numbers are up. However, people are more interested in adopting small pocket pets which cost less to maintain and purchase. Special events and discounts also help the cats and kittens find new homes. This year, my shelter put all kittens in foster care homes until they were at least 12 weeks old. Clean and friendly kittens are easier to adopt out! Just be creative and find ways to promote pets via twitter and facebook.

I have heard of some cases where adoptions seem to be holding steady, but in general with the current economy they do seem to be down. People are just not looking to spend money yet. On the one hand, I am glad people are not adopting pets they cannot afford. On the other, these animals need homes. Shelters are having to get very creative to get people looking and adopting. I do hope things turn around soon.
