Crate training is the easiest way to potty train in my experience, and that also helps the puppies in the chewing stage learn what is appropriate to chew up and saves my house from destruction while I shower! (I put a chew toy & pup in the crate) and I can shower without worry, then out we go to potty and after potty time it is playtime....works for me! No poops inside or chewed up couches!

When hes sheduled to go out, take him out with a bag of his favorite treats. When he goes, treat him like he found you the winning lottery ticket. Do this a few times and it should be good. One additional note, every dog has their own way of saying "Daddy/Mommy, take me out, I gotta go!!!" Be VERY aware of this. after you have it down, your incidents should be slim to none. I give my dogs a pass if they are sick.

Crate training makes potty training a breeze. It also makes leaving your puppy unatended easier too. Google crate training. Good luck!
