Q: Any health effects when neutering a large/giant breed?
I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend and also because I'm just interested to learn all I can about different breeds. She has a bullmastiff puppy who is 4 months old. As you all probably know, for dogs it's typically recommended to have them spayed/neutered at 6 months of age. Her concern is, she's heard from other bullmastiff owners as well as breeders that it's better to wait until he is older to neuter him because doing it early will effect his health in the future. She said specifically, they have said her puppy could suffer from growth abnormalities and joint issues. Something to do with the lack of testosterone in his system after being neutered. I want to be clear she DOES intend to have him neutered. She wants to be a responsible owner and has no intentions of breeding. She is just questioning when is the best time for his future health. If anyone has experience with large/giant breeds (bullmastiffs specifically) please share your thoughts. I (and my friend) greatly appreciate it!!
