Q: Anxiety about Boarding

Anxiety about Boarding

Does anyone have any recent experience with boarding an animal? I will be boarding my baby this week while we are out of town and I am a little worried about it. I am sure that he will be well taken care of. He will be at a facility that is run by our vet's office but I am worried that he will be sad and not understand that we will back for him.

A good thing to do is take them to the kennel for a few hours and then a whole day and increase the time before you leave them for a long period. Some dogs have no problem with it others do. Dogs have no concept of time. By slowly increasing the time they will know you are returning. Check out the kennel, never leave your dog in a kennel that will not let you tour it. Some kennels have fancy rooms and play time outside. I'm sure you can call and check on your dog while you are away.

I don't like boarding my dogs, simply b/c it's like leaving them with complete strangers. Health issues also concern me (i.e. fleas, injuries etc.) even though I take precautions to make sure my kids are protected. I try to find a good friend or family member who can either move into my house with the dogs while I'm gone or can take their house...I'd rather pay someone I know to hang out with them.

We've used a Petsitter instead of boarding. That way our pets stay in familiar surrounds, we're sure they're in a safe place and our Petsitter is excellent.
Read too many things about kennels, of course not all or most, to risk putting my babies in that situation.

Give him something that smells like you; a shirt, etc. This should help calm him. The other suggestion I have, that really won't work for you given this is happening this week, would have been to take him there and show him where he was going to stay. Another time take him there and have him stay for a few hours or half the day, then for a day. Basically working up to a longer stay so he starts to understand you are coming back.
