Q: Abused Dog Won't Play

Abused Dog Won't Play

I know that my dog has a history of physical abuse. It took 2 weeks for her to learn how to walk with us. She's acting pretty much normal now, but she won't play. She won't chase a ball, chew on a toy, or anything!
She's only 8 months old, so still a puppy! I'm sure she'd benefit from some playtime.
Hopefully someone who has dealt with abused dogs can give me some advice to help her open up.

Try getting one of those balls that you can put treats in. If she can associate the treat with the ball she might be more willing to play with it. Or you can some how make your own home made treat toy if you cannot find one.

It may take a little more time for her to open up and play. She obviously has to walk so she did that fairly quickly but she still may be a little reluctant to play. Does she cower and have any emotion when you try to engage her or does she just look uninterested? She may not be toy driven either. She may just like going on long walks or hikes with you. You should just sit on the ground with her and maybe have a toy in your lap and let her get used to them. She may want to play with toys eventually but she may just not be into them. Good luck.

I would just give her a little more time to adjust. She has experinced trauma and that's not easy to forget. I got my hound mix as a puppy from a shelter and back then they also suspected some abuse. It took him months to feel save and any nose or object he didn't know scared him. But he got over it. Give her lots of TLC and be patient. I'm sure she will turn around.

Do you have anyone with a dog nearby that she can play with. Maybe if she sees another dog doing doggie stuff, she will come out of her shell and want to play too. Poor baby.
