Q: A question About Shelters
April 6, 2009 | By Illiana R. | 6 answers | Expired: 1492 days ago
I am A 10 year old girl who knows alot about dogs. I know almost every dog breed and can name a dog breed when she sees it even if its a mix. But what im wondering is if there is a shelter out there who lets kids 10 years and up volunteer? I already volunteer at catnap but i also want to work for a dog shelter. I know some dogs may bite and i know how to handle dogs. IS THERE A SHELTER LOOKING FOR 10 YEAR OLD VOLUNTEER???

i know you are really wanting to volunteer and you sound like you're ready. keep in mind that many shelters have insurance policies that require them to employ adults as volunteers--so if your local shelter won't let you help with the animals right now, they might have something else for you to do until you are old enough. don't take it personally, but don't give up! the person who washes towels and blankets at the shelter is just as important as the people who walk and feed the dogs. :)

what you may also be interested in is volunteering at nature preserves, organizations that focus on the care of wildlife like hawks and deer. many of these places will gladly take a ten year old b/c it encourages youths interest in nature, and it would probably be a lot of fun for someone interested in learning about animals. i know a girl that volunteers at one and she actually teaches hawks, falcons, and eagles how to fly.

Another option is volunteering at your local vets office or even a kennel. Some places may want you to have a parent with you when you volunteer, but it is always fun to get your foot in the door. Good luck.

just call the local shelters and ask them about volunteering. i know our local one wants an adult to be with the animals at all times.

Hi! A lot of shelters in the western suburbs do allow kids 10 years and up to volunteer but they need an adult to volunteer with them. Check out Animal Care League in Oak Park and Naperville Humane Society in Naperville. Another great way to get in some dog experience is to foster for a local rescue or shelter. I volunteered with Magnificent Mutts in Hillside for a while a few summers ago. They frequently have young puppies that need temporary care homes. Good luck!

i do not know where you are from but i would go to your local shelter and explain to them your situation... i would also look up rescues in your area and see if they need any help.... i think that it is awesome that you are interested in giving back to these dogs and i am sure that if you keep trying and investigating someone will allow you to follow your dream
