Georgetown Shelter Cares About Animals

posted 5 years ago

The Georgetown Animal Shelter is a municipal shelter that provides loving care for the animals in its care, as well as numerous avenues for them to find new homes. Cats are showcased at the local PetSmart and at the shelter. Dogs look for new families at adoption events several Saturdays each month and, of course, at the shelter.

The adoption fee of $70 covers annual shots, rabies vaccination, spay/neuter surgery, a microchip, a starter bag of food, and a lifetime of cuddles. Animals are tested for disease prior to adoption, and dogs are treated for heartworms.

Staff and volunteers interact with the dogs and cats regularly and can help you find an animal with a suitable temperament.

The shelter is located in central Georgetown, near San Gabriel Park, and is open 6 days a week, including Saturday and Sunday. Visit www.georgetown.org/departments/animalservicesfor more detail.

Pros: Convenient location, weekend hours, full adoption package

Cons: Municipal shelter, not a no-kill shelter

Georgetown Animal Shelter, small but great!

posted 5 years ago

I volunteer here twice a week. This is a small dog pound with adoption facillities. Around 20 cats and 12 dogs are up for adoption at any given time.

The facilities are well maintained and the staff and volunteers work hard to save adoptable dogs by putting them in the adoption program, with foster families, with rescue groups or other adoption shelters.

They have recently started a Head Start program to work on the behaviors of more difficult to place dogs.

Pros: Good commitment to placing animals

Cons: must euthanize unadoptable dogs and adoptable if not room
